Little Rock's pop duo Joan was another excellent choice of openers for the @misterwives' show last Saturday night at the @thehawthornstl show. The pop duo, augmented by the addition of a third versatile drummer/bassist, had a decidedly retro sound harkening back to the 1980s. Its melodies and vocals reminded many of MTV hits and songs by acts like Mike And The Mechanics, Crowded House, and Mister Mister. It was a simpler time, an innocent time. Mom Jeans and synths are returning, so maybe Joan's timing is perfect.

Manchester, UK's early 1980s alternative, guitar-driven, atmospheric, and highly influential outfit, @thechameleonsband, remains one of the most underrated bands in decades. Despite being a stated influence of bands including Oasis, The Verve, and even the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, they have never achieved the mainstream success of many of their peers. That's not fair. The great news is that they're reformed and playing in St. Louis. Next Tuesday, November 5th, they'll play an all-ages show @redflagstlvenue downtown. Tickets are still available @therecordspace and online at etix. They even have a new EP on Metropolis Records, "Tomorrow Remember Yesterday," which was released weeks ago. It's good to see the return of @thechameleonsband. Be there. Witness living legends in the flesh.

The sold-out, jam-packed @thehawthornstl was transformed into an @juggalochampionshipwrestling extravaganza of thrills, spills, chills, and dark comedy. Before the music portion of the evening started, it was a cavalcade of freaks, geeks, wrestling characters, and flying body slams, pileups, and punches. Sure, it was silly, campy, and kooky, but it was loads of fun for fans of wrestling, music, horror films, gore, and more. And, for the entertainment dollar, we defy you to find a better value. The Jugaloos of all ages know how to party, you all. If you were there, you already know this.

@wakkothekidd was another big part of the over-the-top "Train of Terror Tour" last night at the sold-out @therealicp show @thehawthornstl. They were yet another hardcore rap offering and segment of the big night of extreme entertainment, which included music, wrestling, and spectacles galore.

Nashville's trio, @moodyjoodymusic fronted by two lovely, talented women, Kaitie Forbes and Kayla Hall, and producer Andrew Pacheco, led their bouncy 1980's-flavored synth-pop outfit, with hooks as large and numerous as a Norwegian fishing fleet through a fun-filled, light, and endearing set last night @thehawthornstl They are touring with @misterwives throughout the fall and on the strength of their upcoming debut EP, "Dream Girl," to be released on Photo Finish Records on November 8th. They treated the audience to cuts from their new release, including the longing and sultry track "Velvet Connection," the bouncy, gurgling track "Cuts Deep," the moody and understated "Ground Control," and more. Their sound is poppy and very commercial but indie and edgy enough to crossover to a more selective crowd. This duo and band seemed destined for bigger things. Coming to a radio near you.

Mandy Lee, lead singer of NYC's indie pop outfit @misterwives, should be a household name, especially among pop fans. Alas, she is not...yet. Her show last night @thehawthornstl was worthy of a Super Bowl audience; instead, it was delivered in an intimate setting. Their 20+ setlist included the biographical and personal "Trip Around The Sun," "Out of Your Mind," and hit single "Reflections." Their 2014 single, "Reflections," gained platinum status, and their four other full-length studio releases, including 2023's "Nosebleeds," have all wracked up respectable numbers and critical acclaim. Still, Swifty's status has alluded them. And that's a real shame, as @misterwives are every bit as commercial, energetic, and catchy as Pink, Taylor Swift, or Katy Perry. The primarily female audience (ages 10-65) and some enlightened dudes gave them a great, warm, and enthusiastic reception, sang along with their favorite songs, and yelled their appreciation throughout the show. @misterwives' talent has also been recognized by bands, including Panic! At The Disco, Twenty-One Pilots, Foster The People, and Paramore, which has led to their selection as one of their support acts on multiple tours. This is a band you want to root for. Lee has a natural gift and a solid voice and is a true entertainer and star. Let's hope this band keeps growing their fanbase and grabs the top rung of success.

Former @5fdp guitarist Jason Hook's new band, @flatblack, was one of two exciting support acts at the @godsmack show at @thefamilyarena Sunday night. Vocalist @wes___horton possesses the best head of hair in music and a gritty growl that matches his muscles and lead singer bonafide. Guitarist and founder Jason Hook is still a hard-riffing shredder and seems reborn, leading his own outfit. Bassist Nick Diltz (son of legendary photographer Henry Diltz) and drummer Rob Pierce rounded out the band's sinewy punch and live sound. The band is still relatively new; other than Hook, it was relatively unknown until recently. Their rocking set proved why they were added to the @godsmack tour, and their set Sunday night points to a bright future in stadiums everywhere. Their latest @fearlessrecords release, "Dark Side of The Brain," is out now. #flatback

Twenty-six years later, with eight studio albums under their belts and countless tours in their rearview mirror, Lawrence, Massachusett's heavy-hitting, commercially-friendly quartet, @godsmack, showed the capacity crowd at the @thefamilyarena last Sunday night why they endure and continue to entertain the minions. Following sets from the two openers, @godsmack hit the stage with giant video displays dazzling the eyes for the entirety of the set. At the same time, the band launched into "Surrender" and ran through a pulverizing setlist of 15 total tunes, including their hit and closer "I Stand Alone." The tight set also included the other breakout single, "Stay Away," with its catchy chorus and hooks aplenty, and the witchy groove of "Voodoo." @godsmack proved why they still matter and can still deliver the goods even as time marches on. The 1990s saw a lot of excellent "heavy" and "nu-metal" bands emerge and thrive, and Godsmack belongs in that living history. #godsmack
